Paris has been known around the world as the Capital of Fashion for decades. The city is indeed a stage for multiple fashion shows, and is the home of the greatest fashion houses.
Among the great designers, we can mention Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, Hubert de Givenchy... But the one whose name is told through its museum today is Yves Saint Laurent.
The designer's fashion house is one of those who have been able to impose, reinvent and revolutionize the world of fashion. Yves Saint Laurent contributed to the emancipation of women by giving them freedom and power. The designer designed his collections with the aim of creating the woman of power. He sought to place the woman as an equal to the man. To be the equal of a man, to be of the same status, to be also holder of comfort, strength and assurance.
He has borrowed some pieces from the men's wardrobe. The looks he created are very often inspired by the outfits worn by men in his time. The most attractive and surprising pieces that made him famous and recognized as a talent are: the women's tuxedo (originally a men's garment, because this suit was created to protect from cigar smoke), the first women's pantsuit, the fitted jumpsuit, or the Broadway suit, the peacoat and the trench coat. Yves Saint Laurent has played an important role in the creation of the contemporary woman's wardrobe.
For the anecdote, Yves Saint Laurent had already made pieces from his youth. He used to pick and cut out the silhouettes of his favorite models from his mother's favorite magazines such as Vogue. With the help of gouache, ink or watercolor, he would then create an entire wardrobe for them in paper to dress them.
Yves Saint Laurent was Christian Dior's protégé and became his successor. He is also designated as the heir of Chanel. Trained by the greatest, he is at the death of Mr. Dior the youngest designer in the world. His talent never ceases to succeed.
He met the man of his life, Mr. Pierre Bergé, a French businessman and patron of the arts, with whom he spent fifty years of his life and with whom he opened his fashion house on December 4, 1961, as well as a foundation in their names.

The Yves Saint Laurent Paris Museum has been open since 2017, at the initiative of Pierre Bergé. It occupies the Second Empire-style mansion at 5 avenue Marceau where Yves Saint Laurent's creations were born for nearly 30 years, from 1974 to 2002. The museum is 450 m2 of space highlighting the richness of the heritage of the Pierre Bergé - Yves Saint Laurent Foundation.
Through a retroactive tour, we discover the process of creation of the collections and understand little by little the creative intelligence of Yves Saint Laurent. We can see sketches, fabrics, outfits, and objects that have been used to dress the world of cinema, dance, theater, events and the world (creation of ready-to-wear boutiques for all).

The guided tour is given by professional lecturers trained by the museum staff. You will benefit from anecdotes and have a privileged relationship with the works...
... But also the visit of the restoration workshop. This is only possible once a month. Pieces are exceptionally taken out of the reserves to show you the work carried out by the teams to preserve and enhance the museum's collection. So remember to make a reservation.
We also recommend that you visit the temporary exhibition GOLD, The Golds of Yves Saint Laurent. It started on October 14, 2022 and will end on May 14, 2023. The exhibition is proposed as part of the 60th anniversary of the first collection of the designer. Gold has accompanied him throughout his life in all his collections.
